Kill These Arthropods!

Spiders like the ladybird spider shown here are 8-legged arthropodsSpiders, like the ladybird spider pictured here, are 8-legged arthropods that carry venom in their fangs. As of 2008, approximately 40,000 spider species, and 109 families have been recorded. Females weave silk egg-cases, each of which may contain hundreds of spider eggs. Spiders occur in a large range of sizes. The smallest, Patu digua from Borneo, are less than 0.37 mm in body length. The largest and heaviest spiders occur among tarantulas, which can have body lengths up to 90 mm (about 3.5 inches) and leg spans up to 250 mm (about 10 inches).

Scorpions pictured here are predatory arthropodsScorpions, pictured here are predatory arthropods. There are about 2,000 species of scorpions, found widely distributed south of about 49° N. The scorpion's exoskeleton is thick and durable, providing good protection from predators. Scorpions have two eyes on the top of the head, and usually two to five pairs of eyes along the front corners of the head. The position of the eyes on the head depends in part on the hardness or softness of the soil upon which they spend their lives. All known scorpion species possess venom. Scorpions use their venom to kill or paralyze their prey so that it can be eaten; in general it is fast-acting, allowing for effective prey capture. Although that is true, only around 50 species are known to produce venom that causes serious systemic effects in humans

Centipedes pictured here are arthropods that have between 20 and over 300 legs Centipedes like the Chinese Red Head Centipede pictured here are arthropods with on pair of legs for every body segment. Centipedes can have a varying number of legs from under 20 to over 300 but always have an odd number of pairs. Worldwide there are estimated to be 8,000 species of centipedes. Currently there are about 3,000 described species. They are found in soil and leaf litter, under stones and deadwood, and inside logs.

Millipedes pictured here are arthropods that have between 36 and 400 legsMillipedes like the giant millipede pictured here are arthropods that have two pairs of legs per segment except right behind the nead where there are none Common species have between 36 and 400 legs, but can have up to 750! Most millipedes eat decaying leaves and other dead plant matter, moisturising the food with secretions and then scraping it in with the jaws. However they can also be a minor garden pest, especially in greenhouses where they can cause severe damage to emergent seedlings. Signs of millipede damage include the stripping of the outer layers of a young plant stem and irregular damage to leaves and plant apices.

Mosquitos pictured here are arthropods that inject their poison causing an itchy bump on humans Insects like the mosquito pictured here are a class within the arthropods that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax, and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, and two antennae. Insects include more than a million described species. They are the most common pest invading homes everywhere!

An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton (external skeleton), a segmented body, and jointed appendages. They have over a million described species, making up more than 80% of all described living species, and are one of only two animal groups that are really successful in dry environments. Although arthropods contribute to human food supply, both directly as food and more importantly as pollinators of crops, they also spread some of the most severe diseases and do considerable damage to livestock and crops.
