Kill These Grubs an Lice!
White Grubs pictured here Adults are robust, oblong, and hard-shelled, May beetles are about 19 to 25 mm long and reddish brown to black in color. White grubs have a brown head capsule, a C-shaped body, three pairs of legs, and a slightly enlarged abdomen. On the underside of the last abdominal segment there are two nearly parallel rows of spines. Fully grown grubs average 35 mm in length but range from 20 to 45 mm long
Grass Grubs pictured here are the larvae of the May beetle or June beetle. Grubs eat the roots of the grass, causing the grass to die. With the roots removed, the grass can often be lifted from the soil like a rug. Because of their size and late pupal stage (just before pupation) they cannot be easily killed by pesticides.
Lice, pictured here, infestation on the human body (also known as pediculosis) is very common. Cases number in the hundreds of millions worldwide. While lice can occasionally cause significant illness (typhus, relapsing fever and trench fever), a lice infestation is generally more of an itchy and embarrassing experience.
Head Lice pictured here is a uniquely human experience. Lice do not jump or fly from host to host. They cannot be transmitted via animals but may be transferred by person to person via direct contact and by fomites (inanimate objects -- for example, caps, combs, sheets, etc). The head louse is a grey-white animal about 2-3 mm in length
African Body Lice pictured here, The body louse is slightly larger than the head louse but has the same general appearance. Unlike the head louse, which lives on its human host, the body louse lives in clothing (commonly in the seamed areas) and then transfers to the human host to feed. The life cycle of the head louse and the body louse are similar in character and duration. An important difference, however, is the ability of the body louse to survive for up to 30 days away from its human host.
Grubs, in general, are the larvae form of a beetle. To determine how many grubs you have in your lawn you can use a flat spade to cut back a sample of turf. Count the grubs in the top 3 inches of soil and replace and water the turf. If you take a 6" X 6" sample (1/4 of a square foot), a grub density of more than 2-3 grub per sample probably warrants treatment. Take a dozen or so samples throughout the lawn area to determine which areas may need treatment.
Lice, in general infect hundreds of millions of people every year. Having head lice causes intense itching, but does not lead to serious medical problems. Unlike body lice, head lice never carry or spread diseases.
