Immature Grasshoppers vary in color from fully grown adult grasshoppers. In very young stage, the grasshopper has no wings. In later stages, wings are visible as small pads at end of thorax.
The American grasshopper is camoflaged and can cause injury to corn, oats, rye, peanuts, sugarcane, tobacco, cotton, vegetables, and citrus. The plants are damaged by the grasshopper gnawing on the leaves.
Macrotona Grasshoppers pictured here, are very common in southern and eastern australia. Their size ranges from 1.7-3.0 cm. Coulor varies from red to grey. Most individuals have a bronze coloring behind the rear legs
