Kill These Moles & Gophers!
Moles pictured here burrow, but some species are semi-aquatic. Moles have cylindrical bodies covered in fur, with small or covered eyes; the ears are generally not visible and can be found almost anywhere in N America., Asia, or Europe.
Star-nosed Moles pictured here are little, North American mole found in wet low areas of eastern Canada and the north-eastern United States, Star-nosed moles are easily identified by the eleven pairs of pink fleshy appendages ringing their snout which are used as a touch organ with more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors, known as Eimer’s organs, with which this hamster-sized mole feels its way around
The Common Gopher pictured here are heavily built, and most are moderately large, ranging from 12 to 30 cm (4.7 to 12 in) in length, and weighing a few hundred grams. A few species reach weights approaching 1 kg (2.2 lb). The young are born blind and helpless, and are weaned at around forty days
Pocket Gophers pictured here are widely distributed in North America, extending into Central America. Although they will attempt to flee when threatened, they may attack other animals, including cats and humans, and gophers can inflict serious bites with their long, sharp teeth
Gopher Holes pictured here, can damage soil and crops. Gophers dig these holes to enter or exit their underground hiding places.
Moles are considered to be agricultural pests in some countries, while in others, such as Germany, they are a protected species but may be killed if a permit is received. Problems cited as caused by moles include contamination of silage with soil particles making it unpalatable to livestock, the covering of pasture with fresh soil reducing its size and yield, damage to agricultural machinery by the exposure of stones, damage to young plants through disturbance of the soil, weed invasion of pasture through exposure of fresh tilled soil, and damage to drainage systems and watercourses. Other species such as weasels and voles may use mole tunnels to gain access to enclosed areas or plant roots.
Gophers in general, are small, burrowing animals that come in many varieties. Gophers weigh about a quarter of a kilo, with the head and body about 15 cm long, a tail of 7 cm and have a 2-3 year lifespan (assuming no diseases or predation).
