Kill These Stink Bugs!

A Large Adult Brown Stinkbug is shownBrown Stink Bugs, like the one pictured here, are a type of Pentatomoidea which is a superfamily of insects in the Heteroptera suborder of the Hemiptera order and, as such, share a common arrangement of sucking mouthparts. They are commonly referred to as shield bugs or stink bugs.

Brown Marmorated stink bugs are shown with their reddish colorBrown Marmorated Stink Bugs are pictured here. The best identification for the adult stink bug is the white band on the antennae. The brown marmorated stink bug is more likely to invade homes in the fall than others in the family.

Green Stink Bugs are shown blending in with a leafGreen Stink Bugs are pictured here they are also known as green soldier bugs. It is found in orchards, gardens, woodlands and crop fields throughout North America, feeding with their needle-like mouthparts on the juices of a wide variety of plants from May until the arrival of frost. Adults develop a preference for developing seeds and thus become crop pests (tomato, bean, pea, cotton, corn, soybean, eggplant). When no seeds are present, they also feed on stems and foliage, thus damaging several fruit trees, such as the apple, cherry, orange and peach trees.

Stink bug Nymphs are shown with their bright colorsStink Bug Nymphs are shown here The early instar nymphs are rather brightly colored and striped, turning green when approaching adulthood. Both adults and nymphs have large stink glands on the underside of the thorax extending more than half-way to the edge of the metapleuron. They discharge large amounts of this foul-smelling liquid when disturbed.

Stink Bugs are active throughout all of the United States. Generally found in the garden, stink bugs will find their way into homes and structures when fall evenings start to turn cold. They acquired their name from a natural defense they have which is to release a smell that "stinks". This smell enables them to avoid getting eaten by several species of birds and lizards.!
